There is no doubt that 2013 was an amazing year for music. End of the year lists of top albums and tracks have started to be released, and the decision of what to include and what to chop has been much more difficult than in previous years. 2013 has also been the year for the emerging artist, with smaller bands gaining more recognition and gaining momentum.

I always love the end of the year because it means I get to look back at all of the tracks, albums and live performances I loved from the last twelve months. I get to revisit my favorite new discoveries and rekindle old flames. I started listening to so many new bands this year that I decided these artists needed their own list and recognition. Which is why I bring you: 10 Bands to Watch out for in 2014. These are the bands that I guarantee people will be talking about come the new year and hey, don’t you want to lead the discussion?

#10: Lily and the Parlour Tricks

Let me start off by saying that the ordering of the list is arbitrary. I think all of these bands deserve equal plays in your iTunes. Especially Lily and the Parlour Tricks.

I first found out about this band during CMJ back in October. I had the pleasure of interviewing a few of the band members as well as catching their first set of the marathon. I was immediately blown away by this New York City based band, and have had a pretty big band crush on them ever since. With their dark, sexy, nostalgic sound and storytelling lyrics it is the type of music that just makes you want to burst into a bar, dance, fall in love and solve a crime. All at once. If film noir was a music genre instead of a film one, Lily and the Parlour Tricks would be The Maltese Falcon of the scene. I dare you to try and resist the soaring three part harmonies from Lily, Darah and Morgan. I’ll just tell you now: you can’t.

The Parlour Tricks have been working on new material and hope to have new music out in the first half of 2014, but before that happens I highly suggest checking out the tracks they have already released. I’ve included a few of my favorites below (including their song “Belle Gunness” which you may recognize from this BMW commercial.)
