I hate covers.  Any big fan of music knows that there is nothing worse than listening to someone butcher one of your favorite songs. You can’t get the horrible arrangement out of your head, and it takes every ounce of self control not to tell the YouTube commenters that swear “it’s, like, way better than the original” exactly where they can take their (wrong) opinion. However, curiosity killed the cat and I often find myself clicking on yet another cover praying for it to restore my faith in humanity. In my quest to find cover-goodness I am pleased to report that I have discovered a bunch that I actually like. Of course, none of these are my favorite songs so I had nothing to lose, but trust me, these babies are good.

1. Lennon and Maisy Cover “Headlock” by Imogen Heap

When I listen to this cover these are the thoughts that pop into my head:
1. They are TWELVE and EIGHT?
2. DO THEIR PARENTS BREED TALENTED CHILDREN?
3. Can I adopt them?
4. Why couldn’t I sing like that at eight?
5. Why can’t I sing like that now?

Seriously, do not judge them by their age. These sisters are absolutely incredible.

2. Luke Hemmings covers “Lego House” by Ed Sheeran

Luke Hemmings is a member of 5 Seconds of Summer, an Australian boy band that is currently gaining recognition in the United States after gaining success in the UK/Australia. They are opening for One Direction on their Where We Are stadium tour, and I guarantee you that you should be that friend to send everyone their videos now. In a year you will be able to say “I told you so” when they are topping the charts. However, this clip is all about Luke. Covering an Ed Sheeran song means big shoes to fill, but Luke nails it. He sings it with incredible passion, and the way he sings the word “warm” will give you the chills for days. What a talented cutie.

3. Passenger/Ed Sheeran cover “No Diggity” by Blackstreet and “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Wowza. They take these two songs and completely change gears. They both have smooth, buttery voices that make these two upbeat/rap songs soothing and indie-esq. It is incredible.

4. HAIM and Lorde cover “Strong Enough” by Sheryl Crow

Look. This cover is everything. This is the only cover I have ever listened to and felt it was better than the original. The HAIM sisters are pure genius alone, but throw in the raw vocal talent of Lorde and you have an epic performance. Lorde enters the scene at 1:46 and works the mic like a bo$$. It is four girls creating pure magic on stage, and I could listen to it over and over again. I’m 100% serious- go listen to the entire thing. Twice. You will love it.

4. Ed Sheeran covers “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce

I don’t like Beyonce’s music. I know, I know “HOW can you NOT? She’s Queen B!!!?” I just don’t. I mentioned my distaste for her in class last week and every single girl’s head snapped in my direction and I’ve been an outcast ever since. However, it turns out that when Ed Sheeran sings her songs I do like her music. Roll your eyes, smirk, write a letter to Blue Ivy about it, whatever. Just listen to the cover and know that it is incredible.

5. Bastille covers “What Would U Do?” by City High

This one is beyond weird, but somehow it works. I’m confused as to why they decided to cover this song, but I’m glad they did.

6. Arctic Monkeys cover “Come Together” by the Beatles

There are fake laws in life that you have to follow. If you pass out with your shoes on you’re fair game. First is the worst, second is the best. Don’t cover Beatles songs. The last one never works out in anyone’s favor. Why would you even attempt it? However, Alex Turner does whatever the hell he wants, and I’m absolutely ecstatic he does. Arctic Monkey’s covered a Beatles hit for the London Olympics, and it is perfection.

7. Travis covers “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears

You’ve heard this song 1.5 million times, but not like this. Well done, Travis.

8.  The 1975 covers “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction

I’m a mega One Direction fan. Huge. “Would you jump off of a bridge if One Direction jumped off of a bridge?” Which bridge, what date, what time, and can I get a selfie with Harry Styles before I jump? With that being said I was beyond nervous to listen to this cover. However, the 1975 is also one of my favorite bands, and Matty Healy has a sick voice. Therefore I hit play, and I’m pleased that I did. If you don’t like One Direction I promise you that you WILL love this cover. It sounds like a completely different song. I’m going to HIRE Matty to sing it at my wedding (since Harry Styles can’t sing at his own wedding, duh).

9. 5 Seconds of Summer cover “What I Like About You” by  The Romantics

I dare you not to dance in your seat while listening to this.

10. Ed Sheeran covers “Pony” by Ginuwine

I apologize. I already have 1.5 Ed Sheeran covers on this list, but I couldn’t NOT have this one make the cut. It is everything you need and more. He performs it shirtless, and his angelic voice begins singing at 58 seconds.

Bonus: The Fleeting Ends cover “Girl Afraid” by The Smiths

This Philly band has been my latest obsession, and if they aren’t yours yet I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Like The Beatles, The Smiths are a tough act to cover but TFE absolutely kill this one.
