Thinking of attending Butler University? Here’s what you need to know:

1. Talk to your neighbors and roommates.

Whether you live in a dorm, greek house, or off-campus housing don’t be that roommate that is a mute and doesn’t talk to anyone. Its rude, it makes things awkward, and you look like a crazy to everyone else. Say hi to your neighbors, roommates, and especially RAs when you see them, its just the polite thing to do.

2. Be respectful to BUPD and alert for Excise cops

Remember guys; BUPD is here for our safety. They really are just here for our protection, not here to get us in trouble. Excise cops are here to well…(This taken directly from their website) “The Indiana State Excise Police is the law enforcement division of the Alcohol & Tobacco Commission.  State Excise police officers are empowered by statute to enforce the laws and rules of the Alcohol & Tobacco Commission as well as the laws of the State of Indiana.” So yeah, there’s that, watch out.

3. Don’t wear your lanyard around your neck

This is more for freshmen. Take that damn lanyard off. It makes you look like you can’t remember where your ID or keys are without them dangling right beneath your chin. You’ll understand once you’re an upperclassman.

4. Always participate in class

Our class sizes are small, your professors notice when you speak up and they appreciate it.  When you participate and engage with students it can actually make class more fun and interesting. Some of my favorite classes have been ones that were debates or discussion-based.

5. Don’t skip class, especially to watch Netflix

First world problems

Most professors take attendance, and the ones who don’t still definitely notice when you don’t attend class. Were lucky to have professors who are very understanding if you have to miss class for a real reason (family emergency, sickness, etc.), so don’t take advantage of them by skipping class frequently for a senseless reason like the new season of some show has been added to Netflix.

6. Don’t stay in your room all the time

Roommate, can you leave?

Self-explanatory. It’s unhealthy, depressing, and weird. I know everyone needs their “me” time and personal space, but not all day, everyday. Go outside.

7. Don’t sign up for 20 clubs and then not actually go to any of the meetings for anything

Ain't nobody got time for that

I know how tempting it is to sign up for 20 clubs at Block Party. Its ok, we all did it. Now that we’re about half way through first semester its time to dwindle down to the few things that you are actually passionate about

8. Don’t be afraid to talk to upperclassmen!

Made a new friend

I know to freshmen upperclassmen may seem intimidating, but don’t be afraid to go up and talk to them. Especially if you have them in your classes, introduce yourself! They can be a great person to introduce you to people as well as be a helpful resource for you when it comes to things like scheduling and internships.

9. Utilize campus resources

You're, not Your

The Writer’s Studio along with the Speaker’s Lab are two awesome resources we have on campus that are easy ways for you prepare and improve your writing and projects. Use them!

10.  Get enough sleep

This is one of those things that we all struggle with, but we need to be getting adequate rest to deal with our busy schedules. Even if it means napping between a classes or staying in on a weekend to catch up on sleep, do it. You’ll be happier and healthier.
