If you have a little down time before school starts, or you don’t but you’d rather be doing something other than what you’re supposed to be doing, then try some of these simple and easy dorm decor DIYs that don’t require a lot of time, energy, or materials.
First of all, even if you’ve never thought of yourself as an artist, all you need to do is grab a canvas at an arts and crafts store and some paints, and you’ll see how easy it is to just create!
Secondly, if you want to ditch the posters that most people use and add a little extra twist to your dorm with some home made art, as well as bringing a little piece of home with you, these are some ideas to get you started.
Here are some projects:
A Clothespin & Wire Picture Frame:
- What you need:
- empty picture frame
- pictures
- wire/string
- nails
- hammer
- clothes pins
- How To Make:
- Place a few nails down the sides (parallel to each other) of the frame
- drape the wire (or string) from one nail across the frame, create as much tension/slack as you want
- make sure the wire or string is securely fastened on the nails
- hang your pictures across with a clothes pin!

Melted Crayon Project:
- What you need:
- Box of Crayons/Crayon colors of your choice
- canvas (any size)
- hot glue gun
- newspaper
- Hair dryer
- How to make:
- put a newspaper down before you start
- put the crayons in the order you want
- glue them down on the canvas in that order
- Blow dry for 5 to 10 minutes on each section so that they melt and drip down to the bottom of the canvas (the drips will go onto the newspaper)
- let it dry

Mapped Block Letters:
- What You Need:
- Block letters (your initials, the first letter of your first name, etc)
- A map (print from the internet or use on you already have) of your hometown, your favorite place, etc
- paint (if you want to paint them a different color from white/brown
- modge podge
- paint brushes
- How to make:
- Trace the outline of your letter onto the map.
- Cut out the outline of the letter from the map
- Paint the letter (if you would like)
- cover the front of the letter in modge podge
- line up the map with the front of the letter, and paste it on!
These DIY projects are sure to spice up your dorm room and help make it your own!
