Traditional jobs- where you have to work a 6 hour shift for minimum wage- can be super stressful and draining for the already hectic schedule of a college student. Thinking outside the box for earning money in college can be really beneficial for a student. Even something as simple as making friendship bracelets or cookies and selling them on Etsy could work better for you than slaving away at a retail store. Here are 4 reasons why you should start your own business!

It’s Flexible.

If you’re working for yourself, that means you make the hours! You can just take the week off during finals without a boss getting on your case about it. Also, the internet never sleeps, so if you prefer working at midnight instead of working the morning shift at Macy’s- you can!

It’s Fun.

I think we can all agree that baking cookies, stringing beads or designing postcards is a whole lot more fun than ringing up customers at a convenience store for 6 hours. You can listen to music or get friends to join you in your entrepreneurial adventure!

It looks good on your resume.

The fact that you thought outside of the box and built a small business instead of traditional student employment will show future potential employers that you are business savvy and creative- 2 really important things in the job market today.

You spend a lot of time on the internet anyway.

So why not look into starting an Etsy or eBay shop? Promoting your business can be a lot of work- but it is exciting because you’re doing something for yourself and on your own schedule. You can do something simple or learn a new skill to market. The possibilities are endless.

I’ve been running my Simply Melissy shop on Etsy for 3 years now and it has been quite an interesting adventure. I have had to research what customers want, and where to find the cheapest supplies. However I always enjoyed the work because I was able to do it on my own schedule- which, more often than not is around midnight!

So try a few things and see what fits, try getting some friends to join in! You’ll be relaxing, socializing and making money- you can’t find a better job than that!
