It is easy to forget that while a team of heavily padded men are running up and down a field eagerly preparing for game day each week there is also another team preparing to represent their school. It is safe to say that college marching bands are not given enough credit. It takes hours and hours of dedication and practice to perfectly coordinate a cover for a song that will last less than 4:00 minutes on game day. There are some truly spectacular bands in America covering some of our favorite songs, and we wanted to share them with you. Here are 5 college marching band covers you HAVE to hear!

1. Temple University covers 5 Seconds of Summer’s “She Looks So Perfect”

It is no secret that here at CampusRiot we lead the Team 5SOS wagon. We practically hand out flyers with their faces on it. So when we heard that the City of Brotherly Love’s Temple University covered their mega summer hit “She Looks So Perfect” this past Saturday we just about lost our marbles. Most marching bands wouldn’t think to choose this Aussie band’s tune as their key halftime performance, but we’re glad they did. It is clear from the cheers that playing the not-so-boy-band hit was a total crowd pleaser. Way to go, Temple Owls, and we can’t wait until your next performance.

2.  Ohio University covers Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”

Ohio University is known for having a spectacular marching band. In fact, it was more than difficult to select one of their performances as their best. Is it their spot on tribute to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody?” Maybe their darling take of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful?”  They are all breathtaking. However, we thought this one was their most unique of the bunch.

3. University of Michigan covers Beyonce

Stop. Rewind. Did University of Michigan really get words of encouragement from Queen B herself via video message? They did. With her blessing University of Michigan’s marching band put on a spectacular medley performance of Beyonce’s greatest hits including “Crazy In Love”, “Survivor”, and “Love On Top”. Complete with incredible lighting and glow in the dark elements this marching band may have been the highlight of the game.

4. Boston College Performs With Dropkick Murphys

Technically this isn’t a complete cover, but it is impossible to discard this from our list. Boston College’s marching band performed Dropkick Murphy’s hit “Shipping Up to Boston” with them as a concert’s encore performance, and it is nothing short of incredible.

5. Virginia Commonwealth University covers Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”

Just when we were about to say we wish they had used a massive wrecking ball prop during this performance they one upped us and broke out a massive flag with a cat on it (1:45). Though VCU’s band remained in the stands during the performance and they are a bit smaller than some of the leading marching bands we appreciate their sense of humor.
