Leaving for college makes you excited. You’re finally out on your own for the first time. Nobody’s around to tell you what to do, and you can finally make decisions and take care for yourself. The only problem? Living in the dorms. These usually small, not-so-fancy rooms could use some improvement. So, it’s up to you to make the dorm a much more livable place. After all, you’re the only one taking care of you now. Luckily, you can find all kinds of gadgets that improve dorm room living. Let’s check out a few of them right here.
I can’t tell you how many times I wished I had gotten a microwave for my dorm. Especially if you’re on a meal plan, which is generally standard for dorm living, you might have some trouble, or too many limitations when finding a late night snack. Having a microwave certainly opens up your options. Also, you don’t want to have to go all the way to the cafeteria every time you want some hot food. Plus, now you have a way to heat up any leftovers you take home.
You can find perfectly suitable microwaves for incredibly cheap prices. No need to go all out on the most expensive one you can find.
2. Nice Speakers
Nice speakers are an absolute requirement. You don’t have to get huge ones; in fact, the school probably wouldn’t appreciate it too much if you did. If you can afford wireless ones, though, that certainly helps, as dorms don’t always provide great room or surface space for all of your things. Just make sure you don’t blast music at inappropriate times and get kicked out.
3. Good Laptop
These days, you can’t really go off to college without a laptop. In fact, the quality of your laptop can make an incredible difference in your experience with schoolwork. Most work required of students happens on the computer anyways. You’ll get a school e-mail, get assigned online tests and quizzes, have to post to discussion boards, and refer to previous lectures as many professors these days post their lectures online for review.
Not to mention, with a laptop, you can keep yourself pretty entertained throughout the school year. And don’t worry, not all laptops break the bank. If you want to find a cheaper, but perfectly suitable laptop for school, check out these great Lenovo laptop deals.
With nobody there to clean your room (or to tell you to), you’ve got to take charge of it yourself. You don’t want to end up sleeping in your own filth. So what’s the easiest way to deal with your laziness and lack of a parent? The iRobot Roomba 530. With its built-in dirt detection technology, this little gadget scoots itself around your floor and vacuums up all of your dust and dirt. It’s like they made it specifically for college students.
5. Coffee Maker
Trust me; this saves you a fortune. Many students don’t realize how much they love coffee until they start taking those touch college classes early in the morning, and have those late nights studying for finals. You don’t want to have to spend all your money at Starbucks every day. This way, you don’t have to leave your room if you’re in the middle of a long study session to get coffee, it’s right at your fingertips. Plus, with a coffee maker, you can share with your roommate, which they’ll greatly appreciate — just be sure to check with your RA to make sure you’re allowed to have one in your room!
6. Excellent Alarm Clock
An alarm clock seems obvious, but you’ve got to make sure you have one that works well for you. Especially if you’re embracing the party side of college, you’ll need a clock that works well enough to get past the post-alcohol ears of yours in the morning and get to your brain. Phones don’t always give the necessary volume for this.
It’s not like highschool, you don’t simply get a slap on the wrist for missing an important class. Professors don’t always care whether you show up, and many of them won’t help you out if you miss anything important. So just make sure it’s loud!
7. Good Headphones
For those times when speakers aren’t appropriate, you’ll need some decent headphones. Music offers one of the only ways to keep you awake, motivated, and in good spirits while simultaneously working on homework. So, when it’s too late or early to use your speakers, or when you’re stuck in the library, your headphones will keep you company. Not to mention all the long ten or twenty minute walks to class. Having headphones for the walk makes it sound much more appealing.
Make sure to prepare yourself for your dorm experience by picking up some of these excellent gadgets!
