Welcome to another week of Haley’s College Dorm Essentials! This week’s feature object: a coffee maker! Coffee is vital for my day to begin. It kind of turns on my brain switch and gets me properly functioning. And I know I’m not alone when I say that!

First, here are some reasons why coffee is the best!

  • Although in the past there have been health risks associated with coffee drinking, there are more recent studies that show that the health benefits of coffee consumption outweigh the risks.
  • It contains caffeine that blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain which then allows the brain to be stimulating, improving mood, brain function, and energy levels.
  • The caffeine can also help you burn fat by boosting your metabolic rate as well as improve your physical performance because of the increase in adrenaline levels caused by caffeine.
  • Coffee is extremely rich in nutrients and contains antioxidants and can prevent or decrease one’s chance of getting lots of different diseases such as Parkinson’s or Diabetes.

If that hasn’t convinced you to start drinking coffee and get a coffee maker for your dorm, I’m not done yet:

Having a coffee maker in your dorm room will make your life so much easier. Whether you set it to auto so that it starts brewing as you wake up, or you make it as your getting ready so you can put it in your to-go cup for class, it is so much more convenient than buying.

Imagine, waking up to the smell of fresh coffee being brewed each morning. It will save you so much money (somewhere around $150), it will save you time before class and doesn’t take up a lot of room. Coffee makers can be large or small, complicated or simple, expensive or cheap. Freshman year I had a $12 coffee maker that I still have and works perfectly as I head into my senior year. In the kitchen at my house we have a communal Keurig, which is really convenient (all though on the more pricey side) but comes in many sizes and is really quick and easy to use.

Bring a coffee maker with you to school (you can get one at Target, Walmart, BestBuy, etc). Usually, at your school community center or union or convenience store they may have near your dorms, they sell coffee grounds as well as filters, so you don’t even have to go far to get what you need!

Do you drink coffee daily?
