We love college pride, we love sports, and we especially love alliteration (sorry, nerd status!) so Mascot Monday is our attempt at combining all 3 things! Each week we will feature a different, random college mascot, just because. Maybe because we think it’s weird, maybe we think it’s hilarious, or maybe it’s just totally awesome (or some combination of all three!) Check back every Monday to see if we feature your school! Want us to feature your school’s mascot? Comment, email us, or tweet @SurvivinCollege with the tag #MascotMonday!
This week on Mascot Monday: The South Carolina Gamecocks

Okay, okay. Stop giggling. We know you know what a gamecock actually is. It’s a rooster. Calm yourselves.
Now that we got that over with, let’s talk more about the South Carolina Gamecocks. They’re totally awesome. Just look at their logo. That is one heck of a rooster. The talons, the tail-feathers, the angry, beady eyes. We’ve found another mascot to add into our list of “badass” college mascots. So what’s the history of the South Carolina Gamecocks and their mascot, Cocky? Wikipedia tells all:
“The unique moniker is held in honor of Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina war hero who was given the name “The Carolina Gamecock” during the American Revolution for his fierce fighting tactics.”
Okay, sweet! The Gamecocks actually have a noble, not confusing, and pretty fierce history. You know what else we love about the South Carolina Gamecocks? Their stadium (Williams-Brice Stadium) is cleverly nicknamed “The Cock Pit.” Isn’t that fabulous? So what does Cocky the Gamecock look like in real life? Let’s see here…

…Wait. WTF? That’s really it? We thought the Gamecocks’ mascot would be a total badass based on the school’s logo! We feel jipped! No, worse – bamboozled! Cocky the Gamecock is more like a high/sleep deprived Woody the Woodpecker/Foghorn Leghorn combo. We’re leaving the Cockpit now. Peace out, South Carolina!
Just kidding. We still love you.
