We love college pride, we love sports, and we especially love alliteration (sorry, nerd status!) so Mascot Monday is our attempt at combining all 3 things! Each week we will feature a different, random college mascot, just because. Maybe because we think it’s weird, maybe we think it’s hilarious, or maybe it’s just totally awesome (or some combination of all three!) Check back every Monday to see if we feature your school! Want us to feature your school’s mascot? Comment, email us, or tweet @SurvivinCollege with the tag #MascotMonday!

This week on Mascot Monday: The Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers (AKA Big Red)

“I’m sexy, I’m cute! I’m popular to boot! / I’m vicious, great hair! The boys all love to stare! /I’m wanted, I’m hot! I’m everything you’re not! / I’m pretty, I’m cool! I dominate the school! /Who am I? Just guess!”

Uh…Big Red?

Okay, so the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers’ mascot isn’t that Big Red. Normally we would explain what this week’s mascot actually is, but, we’re not really sure what Big Red is. We can start by telling you what it’s not, maybe? We already know it’s not everyone’s least favorite cheerleader. It’s also not McDonaldland’s Grimace, despite bearing a striking resemblance (minus the purple-ness). One thing we do know: this week, we have fallen back into the category of oddly cute but horrifying mascots.

Anyway, we should probably explain what the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers actually are (and just what is Big Red, exactly) so here’s what we could conjure up from around the Interwebz:

According to Wikipedia, it’s “a red, furry blob created by WKU student Ralph Carey in 1979. Big Red is meant to symbolize the spirit of WKU students and alumni as well as the sports teams’ nickname, the “Hilltoppers,” (with Big Red’s head shaped like a hill) a name chosen because the school’s campus sits atop a hill.”

Wait, really? That’s it? It’s a red blob? (We could’ve told you that already.) It’s head is shaped like the top of a hill, because the school is on a hill…thus they are known as the hilltoppers (unless you’re a woman, in which case you are a “lady topper” which sounds really awkward, if you ask us.) Okay, Western Kentucky. You can have your big red blob. But know that, despite our love for you, we are judging you. That is all.

What do you think of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers?
