We love college pride, we love sports, and we especially love alliteration (sorry, nerd status!) so Mascot Monday is our attempt at combining all 3 things! Each week we will feature a different, random college mascot, just because. Maybe because we think it’s weird, maybe we think it’s hilarious, or maybe it’s just totally awesome (or some combination of all three!) Check back every Monday to see if we feature your school! Want us to feature your school’s mascot? Comment, email us, or tweet @SurvivinCollege with the tag #MascotMonday!
This week on Mascot Monday: The Wake Forest University Demon Deacons
It’s a little odd, we have to admit, that this week’s mascot isn’t some sort of weird animal or mystical creature like most college mascots. We’ve been on the “weird” mascot kick for a few weeks, and this week’s feature is no exception! This mascot is certainly one of the weirdest we’ve seen yet. So how did Wake Forest University decide to be represented by a “demon deacon”? Well, the school’s website explains,
As the Deacons started recording wins on a regular basis, the existing nicknames of “Baptists” and “Old Gold and Black” did not seem to capture the new spirit of Wake Forest athletics. When the Deacons pulled a particularly satisfying win off over rival Duke, sports editor Mayon Parker of Ahoskie searched for a new phrase to describe the “devilish” spirit that marked the athletic teams. He found that description in “Demon Deacon.”
We’re not sure what led them to be called the “Deacons” in the first place – religious figures don’t seem to make for a great sports mascot, but this was a long time ago and who are we to judge?
What’s great about the Demon Deacons is that they make no bones about being classy and full of swag! The site describes them as such, “there is only one way to dress a Demon Deacon — with distinction.” Try and tell us that’s not fabulous. Just try. And, while you may not think this is really a fear-inducing mascot or has anything to do with good luck in sports – just think: we’re pretty sure this Demon Deacon must help them with (wait for it, wait for it!) possessions. Anyway, this week we’re loving the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons, no matter how weird it may seem.
