We love college pride, we love sports, and we especially love alliteration (sorry, nerd status!) so Mascot Monday is our attempt at combining all 3 things! Each week we will feature a different, random college mascot, just because. Maybe because we think it’s weird, maybe we think it’s hilarious, or maybe it’s just totally awesome (or some combination of all three!) Check back every Monday to see if we feature your school! Want us to feature your school’s mascot? Comment, email us, or tweet @SurvivinCollege with the tag #MascotMonday!

The Washington State Cougars have always had one of the best mascots in the country.  We already know mascots are often credited as the primary source of school spirit and Washington State is no exception.  No matter how the Cougars may be doing on the field, Washington State fans can always rely on the university’s mascot, Butch T. Cougar, to keep the crowd energized.  The Cougars’ mascot is so incredible and badass that he’s even built a fan base that stretches beyond the confines of Washington.

According to Butch’s Wikipedia page, the cougar was adopted as Washington State’s official mascot back in 1919.  However, it wasn’t until 1927 that the university had introduced a cougar cub to the student body as the face of the university and its athletics program.  The cub was given the name Butch after Herbert “Butch” Meeker, a well-known football star at the time.  The mascot was represented by a live cougar for over 50 years until Butch VI died in 1978 at the age of 15.  Since that year Butch has been represented by a costumed version of Washington State’s beloved feline.

As far as logos come in the world of college athletics, Washington State deserves to be ranked among the best in the entire country.  The Cougar logo was designed in 1936 by an art student who was working as a summer sign painter on campus.  Not only does the logo incorporate the university’s initials but they’re designed to form the head of a cougar.  I mean really, how much cooler can you get?  You can’t.  You don’t see a whole lot of schools attempt this feat but when you do, it’s always incredibly awesome.

And if you thought the Cougars’ logo was awesome just wait until you see the mascot, Butch T. Cougar.  He can always be found at Washington State sporting event rockin’ his best Cougars gear.  He’s not only become a fan favorite on campus but throughout the country.  In fact, he was named the 2006 Capital One Mascot of the Year.  You really can’t get much better than that.  He’s both a great mascot and ambassador for the university and Washington State is very lucky to have him representing their school.
