On Friday night, Nohemi Gonzalez was doing what many of us have done and will do in the future: enjoying a night out while studying abroad.  The 23-year-old was at La Belle Equipe when a gunman in a black car shot into the bistro.  Gonzalez is the only confirmed American killed during the terrorist attacks in France over the weekend.

Gonzalez was a design student a Cal State Long Beach, who had been studying abroad in Paris since September. Her family is from Mexico, and she was a first-generation American. She was also the first in her family to attend college.

Gonzalez, who professors called a “gifted student,” worked at Armani Exchange, had a boyfriend and was just trying to make it in this world… Nohemi is all of us.

Vigils are being held in her honor… and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Here she is in her own words, according to The Los Angeles Times:

“I am Mexican American, and I also happen to be first generation born in the United States. I grew up in Whittier and had a very hard working mother that raised me to be extremely independent. If I had to describe myself in a few words I would say I am very high spirited, clean, orderly and self driven.”

Do you have any words for Nohemi Gonzalez’s family and friends?
