No, Old Dominion dudes, no, just no.
The University and its students are making headlines these past few days thanks to a trio of banners that were displayed at an off-campus house associated with the college.
The three banners hung from Virginia home’s balcony and read “Freshman Daughter Drop Off, “Rowdy And Fun, Hope Your Baby Girl Is Ready For A Good Time,” and… “Go Ahead And Drop Off Mom Too…”
Classy, huh? We think not…
In response to the horrific banners, President John R. Broderick said he was “outraged” by the messages. The banners have since been taken down, but it seems the damage is done, and the university has gone into full on damage control, posting multiple social media posts to reiterate their no tolerance stance on sexual harassment. “An incident occurred this weekend that does not reflect the University’s commitment to the prevention of Sexual Assault and Dating Violence. Not only do these actions taken by a few individuals undermine the countless efforts at Old Dominion University to prevent sexual assault, they are also unwelcoming, offensive, and unacceptable,” the school wrote on Facebook.
The Huffington Post grabbed a screenshot of the photo of the banners, which was originally posted on social media. The person who posted it has changed their Facebook name, and refused to comment to the online newspaper.
Banners like these, and this sort of chauvinistic way of thinking in many college communities, are not to be taken lightly. The number of college rapes are on the rise, and according to statistics, 1 in 4 college women will be the victim of sexual assault.
There is nothing funny about that…
Are you offended by these banners from Old Dominion College students?
