For the intern-dwellers, the city kids, and everyone who has ever had to hail a cab, there is a new app for you! HAILO is an app available in select cities that helps makes your life a lot easier when it comes to taking a cab. It streamlines the entire process from hailing to paying, and saves both you and the cabbie time and money.
HAILO began in London in 2011, and since than has helped coordinate 3 million cab rides, and has 30,000 registered cab drivers using the app. The app recently became available in New York City earlier this summer and has gained approval of the Taxi & Limousine Commission recently, which isn’t the easiest thing to do.
The app fundamentally helps with the heartache of actually hailing a cab. Nobody likes walking down 8th avenue screaming at every filled cab that walks by and cabbies estimate that they spend 40-60% of their time looking for fares, and this app helps eliminate both of these problems. You can easily enter your location (well it grabs it automatically via built in GPS), and the app will display how long it will take for a registered cabbie to get to your location, also showing all cabs near your location on the map.
You must have payment information input into the app (we’ll get to that) and will then be able to get yourself a ride. A picture of your cab driver will appear as well as a phone icon which will allow you both to easily get in contact if you can’t find one another.
One of our favorite features which is still being implemented is the auto-payments. When you have payment information in the app, you will soon be able to essentially leave your wallet at home, get in the cab and pay. You can chose and auto-percent tip and your fare will be automatically paid when you leave the cab. Again, this is a feature that helps both the passengers and the cab drivers, since they don’t have to worry about getting jipped.
