It’s one thing to be a good basketball team, but it’s an entirely different thing to do it in style. Over just the last couple years, uniforms have become a large focus within the world of college basketball. Lately, it seems as though some teams update their uniforms every other year–but I’m not complaining. Not to mention the special uniforms that come out each season for a select list of universities. Like it or not, the uniform is a pivotal aspect to college hoops. They bring a sense of style, flash and pride to the game that we all love. So join us as we celebrate the best of the best, here is our count down of the best uniforms in college basketball.
10. University of Cincinnati Bearcats
The Bearcats debuted a new uniform in 2013, and lucky for us, they got rid of the claw design on the shoulders. This year’s uniform is much simpler as Cincinnati has kept the same lettering for the name and numbers while revamping the jersey with a new neckline. After finally dropping last year’s shoulder design, the Bearcats have adopted a much sleeker neck to give the uniform a more classy look. And believe me it works.
9. University of Kentucky Wildcats
We all are well aware how talented the Kentucky Wildcats are. But that’s not the only thing they have going for them; they’re uniforms are pretty badass. The blue and white color scheme is as classy as they come and the uniform design–although used by several other programs–is flawless. The design on the back is pretty awesome as well and the small Kentucky patch near the back of the neck is a nice upside to an already perfect uniform.
8. Duke University Blue Devils
Our list wouldn’t be complete without Duke. As much as it pains for me to say, the Blue Devils have one of the best uniforms in college basketball. Even their black uniform looks incredibly awesome! But you can’t get much better than Duke’s iconic white uniforms. Between the side paneling to the design on the back, this is an all-time classic.
7. University of North Carolina Tar Heels
If we’re going to have Duke on this list, there’s no way we can leave off their arch-rival, North Carolina. Anyone would argue the Tar Heels easily have one of the most legendary uniforms in college hoops. The white and Carolina blue class it up a bit while the argyle pattern running down the sides of the jersey and shorts bring a unique aspect to the uniform. One that which sets it apart from the rest.
6. UCLA Bruins
Whenever you talk about classic college basketball uniforms you can’t help but mention the Bruins. There’s no doubt that UCLA’s design is simple. But sometimes simplicity goes a long way. The color scheme is flawless and the blue and yellow trim bring the uniform to a whole new level. Make note of the fact that UCLA hardly ever changes their uniform design and if they do it’s only a minor alteration. That alone signifies how special this uniform is.
5. Syracuse University Orange
No list would be complete without Syracuse. What makes Syracuse’s home uniform such a success is the accent of orange in the jersey and shorts. And if you couldn’t get enough color just check out their road uniform: orange overdrive–in the best way possible. You can’t argue with the color and the design running along the sides of the shorts bring it all together.
4. Virginia Commonwealth University Rams
I can’t do it. I cannot find a single thing I don’t like about VCU’s new uniforms, it can’t be done. This season’s uniforms feature a bolder and more modern chest mark. I’m also a huge fan of the adjustments that were made to the shoulders and sides of the uniforms. While I did like their older uniform, this season’s design is far superior and earns the Rams some much-deserved style points.
3. Michigan State University Spartans
Although the Spartans aren’t the only team to have this same style, the lettering is what makes it unique. Pair that with the white-green color combination and you’ve got one outstanding uniform. Not to mention the Spartan logos placed on the side of the shorts and right along the waist line are both a huge upside. Then you add the design on the back and there’s no denying Michigan State deserves to be on our list.
2. University of Kansas Jayhawks
It seems as though no matter how often Kansas updates its uniforms they’re always stellar, and this year is no different. I really like how they have added some color to the shoulders–especially on the road unis. And the lettering has always been badass, so there’s no need to change that. The sides of the shorts are also a really nice improvement to an already iconic uniform. What truly takes Kansas to a whole new level is they have an awesome throwback uniform that pays tribute to a more retro look–and it’s pretty sweet I might add.
1. University of Arizona Wildcats
The first thing that catches my eye about the Wildcats’ uniform is the lettering, but it doesn’t stop there. The rolling neck line and broad stipe running across the shoulders are both subtle, yet effective in elevating the look of the uniform. But the best part is the design on the back of the uniform set as a backdrop to Arizona’s state flag and the university’s geographical location. Not to mention the design going along the side of the shorts is pretty awesome as well.
