The world of movies is a cluttered one, where new scripts, adaptations, and ideas emerge on a daily basis. With all of this creative energy constantly flowing, it is impossible to fund, shoot, and eventually release every single movie. This leaves some potentially inspiring cinema abandoned at the drawing board. Ever wonder about some of Hollywood’s unfinished projects? Props to Mental Floss‘ John Green (Author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars) for this countdown of “55 Unfortunately Unfinished Films”. I’m a huge movie fan, but I must say I didn’t know much about these unreleased films until I watched this video. “55 Unfortunately Unfinished Films will have your imagination doing somersaults.” Who wouldn’t want to see the sequel to Dude, Where’s My Car? (Seriously Dude,Where’s My Car? I think I understand why this one didn’t break through to the big screen). But you’d be shocked and, in some cases, disappointed to hear about some of these movies that were never completed.
In the 1960’s, John Lennon of the Beatles had his heart set on playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings. Allegedly, the rest of the most influential rock band in history wanted to follow Lennon and star in the movie. I thought this was a joke at first, but apparently it’s 100% true! Imagining Paul McCartney as Frodo, Ringo Starr as Sam, and George Harrison as Gandolf seems like something straight out of a really weird dream. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find this video absolutely fascinating. Great ideas were wasted, poor ideas were attempted, and 55 films were lost in translation.
