If anyone can do it, it is definitely Sam Smith. Only he would be capable of turning an 80’s dance song into a beautiful ballad of love.
At only 21 years old, Smith is definitely making a name for himself. The British singer rose to fame in the UK late in 2012 and has created a fan following in the US after performing “Latch” with Disclosure on Jimmy Fallon in January of this year.
Taking on “How Will I Know” is an impressive feat for the young singer. As one of Whitney Houston’s huge success songs, a chart topper and featured on her Greatest Hits album, it is definitely a daunting task to not only follow in Houston’s footsteps, but to create an entirely new rendition of the song as well. And of course he does it flawlessly. This impressive recreation of the song already has almost two million views on YouTube.
He performed the cover on SiriusXM Hits 1, and was definitely not expecting the popularity that the video gained.
1 million views in 3 days!! Unbelievable!! Wasn’t expecting that. So happy you all love it x http://t.co/k5syYXZmGx

He in no way tries to compete with the talent and energy of Whitney Houston, and as more of a tribute to her, he transforms the song into completely his own. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest about a month ago, Smith describes his style as much more emotional than most other men in the industry because he is an emotional person and doesn’t “have any bravado to hide behind.” His emotional songs are definitely a departure from most male singers of this time, even soul singers, and due to this novelty and extreme difference from the norm, it has helped him become a phenomenon and a fan favorite.
