Sure, he’s blue and has a mad sprint, but what else is there to know about Sonic the Hedgehog? Apparently, a lot. Alltime10s, which is responsible for eye-opening videos such as 10 Shocking Facts About McDonald’s, 10 Illegal Foods, and 10 Countries That Don’t Officially Exist, creates videos that highlight little-known facts on a variety of categories. Their 10 Little-Known Facts About Sonic the Hedgehog video exposes some surprising details about one of our favorite video game characters.
Did you know that Sonic’s red shoes are based on Santa’s wardrobe color scheme, or that his shoes were designed after Michael Jackson’s boots in his music video “Bad?” Sonic’s name has even changed from the creators’ original vision: he was originally called ‘Mr. Needlemouse.’ We like ‘Sonic’ better. Even more shocking? The designers’ early illustrations characterized Sonic as the lead singer of a rock band who had a human girlfriend… Named Madonna.
Sonic has even made its way into the science world. A gene named Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is necessary for the development of human embryo, and can cause animals to have two faces. ‘Sonic Sister’ was a role-playing game that would have been based on Sonic’s long-lost sister (yes, apparently he has a sister). Unfortunately, the game was canceled due to fan retaliation. Before Sonic was picked as Sega’s ultimate mascot, Dr. Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik was set to take the role. It also turns out that Sonic designer Yuji Naka didn’t do all of his research, and assumed that hedgehogs can’t swim. This is the reason Naka designed Sonic to drown easily, although hedgehogs are actually able to swim just fine.
