It’s Monday. And that means we’ve put another weekend of college football behind us. And once again, the SEC continues to remind everyone why the past five national titles are in its possession.
We’ve made it through the first month of college football and who’s better, LSU or Alabama?
Well, on Saturday night in Morgantown, West Va., then-No. 2 LSU had its way with then-No. 16 West Virginia. The fast paced Mountaineers were able to gain 533 total yards off the Tigers’ stout defense. But, with four turnovers, West Virginia was unable to take the game away from Les Miles’ squad.
With undoubtedly the toughest September schedule, the football world was abuzz that LSU should take the No. 1 spot from Oklahoma, who semi-struggled against Missouri. And they did. On Sunday, the AP Poll voters awarded the Tigers the top spot. But, what about Alabama?
Well, Alabama is sitting pretty. In a 3 vs. 12 showdown, the Tide routed SEC foe Arkansas, winning 38-14. The Alabama defense suffocated Arkansas’s offense. Razorback quarterback Tyler Wilson took a beating, and eventually left the game, letting backup Brandon Mitchell take over. The Tide defense wasn’t the only thing that looked good Saturday. The offense continued to hold steady and special teams had some highlight plays as well.
As of Sunday, the Tigers were No. 1 in the AP Poll and Alabama was No. 3. But, in the USA Today Coaches Poll, the teams were tied at No. 2.
Before the season even started, November 5th loomed large on the calendar for both teams. But, with every win and every passing Saturday, the stakes grow higher and higher. If everything continues as it is, this battle will basically be the national championship. Bryant Denny Stadium was rocking in 2009. Tiger Stadium was rocking in 2010. And it’s all but guaranteed Bryant Denny will once again be rocking in 2011.
There’s a showdown looming in the SEC West, you better get ready, because the Tide and the Tigers are ready for a battle.
