All college students should get a job some time in their college career, but working and studying is no easy feat and it definitely isn’t for everyone. Balancing a job and school requires exceptional time management skills and a lot of determination. Although holding a job gives you that much needed work experience, it can be more time-consuming than useful for some college students.
There are, however, certain jobs that are ideal for students to take. On-campus jobs are especially convenient and flexible when you need to study for that important upcoming exam. Campus employers are more understanding when it comes to rescheduling so you can focus more on your studies when you need to—a.k.a. the ideal balance.
Besides on-campus jobs, try to find jobs that are just as flexible or jobs that only require you to work on the weekends. True, the weekend is suppose to be your time off, but you’d be surprised at how much more time there seems to be in a day after you take on more and more duties. The very emotion of feeling stressed forces you to be more productive and efficient with the time that you do have. At least, I know I’m 10 times more productive when I have more work to do than when I have only a little work to do. There’s something about knowing that you have no time to procrastinate that finally gets you motivated to finish all those things you need to.
But getting a job while in college isn’t a must for everyone. You can volunteer with your time or focus wholeheartedly on your studies. I do think it’s generally a good idea to be exposed to the work place of your future career, however. Internships are a great way to gain firsthand exposure and make long-lasting connections with future employers.
Lastly, if you do have a job, make sure that you find that fine balance between school, work, and social time. Recognize that scheduling 20+ hours a week may take away time from the other important parts of your life. Remember, sleep is important too!
